Chat

Chatting is one of the most frequently used applications in the Internet — you also have the opportunity to do this in Stud.IP.

Click on the community icon on the header bar: Attach:chatcommunityheader.jpg Δ

By default you see the general chatroom and a chatroom with your name (your personal chatroom). The red icon indicates that someone is inside the chat and the grey icon that the room is empty. On the info box on the right you can also see whether someone is inside the chatroom.

To enter a chatroom click on its name and a link "enter" will appear. Attach:enterchatroom.jpg Δ

The chatroom will open in a new window in your browser. Thus, you can always chat with one eye and continue working with the other one. The Chat window looks something like this:

  1. You see the chatter’s messages in the large area. In the box at the upper right, you see the other people who are in the Chat room.
  2. You enter your text in the text field behind Message — you send it with the Enter key or with the “OK” buttons. A few seconds later you see it in the large chat window.
  3. If you enter the /color blue command in the text field, the font colour changes. Naturally, it does not have to be blue, also green, yellow, or red (English colour terms) or entry of the hexadecimal colour codes (this is something for experts) is possible. The individual coloration is very useful for quickly assigning the contributions to the people involved.
  4. You can also use smileys in your chat. You will find a complete overview of all smileys here. Try entering the following to test this::bounce: and this funny guy should be hopping around your screen.
  5. Text formatting in chat functions just like the smileys. Find out how it works here.
  6. You exit the Chat room with the Cancel button or the /quit command.
  7. If you type /help, you are shown an overview of all the commands possible in the chat room.
